I have watched a lot of people meet a number they did not expect. The puppy weight calculator above will give you one too, but it will show its working — and the first thing worth saying is that the honest answer to how big will my puppy get is a range, not a number. Anyone handing you a single figure to one decimal place is selling certainty that does not exist.
My name is Dana Whitcomb. I am a certified veterinary technician, twelve years in — seven in general practice, five of them on overnight emergency. I have weighed a great many puppies. I built this because the tools people were bringing to me in the exam room were, without exception, doing something I would fail a student for.
Why most puppy weight calculators are doing arithmetic, not biology
Nearly every puppy size calculator on the internet works the same way. It takes today's weight, multiplies it by a constant, and prints the answer. Double the weight at six months. Multiply the 14-week weight by 2.5. Take the six-week weight times four.
It doesn't much matter what the thing calls itself, either. Puppy weight predictor, puppy size predictor, dog growth calculator, puppy weight estimator, puppy calculator — I've used most of them, and under the branding they're running the same multiplication. Which is why one tool of ours covers all of it: the question "what size will my puppy be" and the question "how heavy will he get" have the same answer, and it comes off the same curve.
Here is the problem, and it is not a subtle one. A multiplier is a straight line. Growth is a curve. Puppies grow fast, then slower, then they stop. A constant ratio cannot describe a shape that flattens out, so these rules drift worst exactly where owners care most — the big dogs who keep growing well past their first birthday.
Run it on my own dog. Wendell is a 62 lb Labrador-hound mix, neutered, seven years old, currently asleep against my chair. At six months he weighed about 44 lb. The "double the six-month weight" rule says he should have finished at 88 lb. He finished at 62. That rule was 42% wrong about my dog, and it was wrong in the direction that makes people buy the wrong crate and panic about the food bill.
Why so wrong? Because large-breed puppies are not half-grown at six months. On real growth data they are about 71% grown. The rule assumes 50%. It is not a rule of thumb; it is a rule of nobody-checked.
I went looking for the source of these multiplier rules — a study, a dataset, an error bound, anything. There isn't one. No peer-reviewed source proposes or validates any of them. The accuracy figures competitors quote next to them ("75–85% accurate!") are uncited and appear to be invented outright. The "weight at six weeks × 4" rule cannot even be tested against the best available data, because that data does not start until 12 weeks.
What this puppy weight predictor does instead
It uses growth curves. Specifically, the growth standards built by Salt and colleagues and published in PLOS ONE in 2017 — a model fitted to records from roughly 33,000 healthy dogs across about 900 US veterinary hospitals, screened to animals in ideal body condition. It is the best thing that exists in this subject, and it is what the WALTHAM puppy growth charts your vet may have on the wall are built from.
The method is simple to describe. At any given age, a puppy of a given size class and sex has reached a predictable percentage of its adult weight. Divide today's weight by that percentage and you have an adult estimate that respects the actual shape of the curve.
Wendell again, since I have his records. At 14 weeks he weighed 22 lb. A large-breed male at 14 weeks is 35.5% of his adult weight. 22 ÷ 0.355 = 62 lb, with a published range of 55.8–68.2 lb. He is 62 lb. I am not going to pretend that precision is typical — that is a curve landing dead-centre and it will not always do that — but it is the right kind of answer, and the range around it is the honest part.
The part I have to tell you, which nobody else does
Here is something I found while building this, and it genuinely changed the tool. There is no published growth standard for giant breeds. None. The researchers who built these curves tried and could not do it — growth among breeds over 40 kg (88 lb) was too inconsistent to combine into a single curve, so they published five categories and left the sixth blank. Royal Canin's own veterinary teaching material says the same.
Which means every Great Dane, Mastiff and Newfoundland prediction on the internet — including the one this site will give you if you pick "giant" — is an extrapolation with no evidence base underneath it. We label ours as exactly that, right on the result. As far as I can tell we are the only ones who do.
Where the akc puppy weight calculator data fits in
Breed data comes from the AKC breed standards — 151 breeds, transcribed from each breed's own page. Choosing a breed just sets your size class; the curve does the rest. Two honest notes on that. First, a breed standard is a show ideal, not a measured population, so real pet dogs spread wider than the standard implies. Second, the AKC publishes no numeric weight at all for some breeds — the Cane Corso standard says only "proportionate to height," which is true and completely useless for arithmetic. We kept the breed and said so rather than inventing a range.
The AKC also publishes its own growth percentages, and they disagree with the WALTHAM curves. At six months the AKC says a large-breed dog is 60% grown; the curve data says 71%. At twelve months, AKC says 85% and the curves say 97%. That is a big gap. The AKC table carries no citation and no stated data source; the WALTHAM figures come from a peer-reviewed model on tens of thousands of dogs. We follow the curves — and we show you both numbers on how we calculate rather than quietly picking a side.

Two things to notice. The dashes are real: those curves have no data that early, so we print nothing rather than a guess. And look at the bottom two rows against the top two — a toy dog is 41% grown at 12 weeks and essentially done by its first birthday, while a giant breed is still adding weight at 18 months. Same species. That is why one multiplier could never have worked.
Female puppies grow on a different curve
They do, and it is measurable — a roughly 6–7% difference in shoulder height across 74 breeds and 6,221 individual dogs, and a visibly different weight curve. Most calculators either ignore sex or apply a flat percentage haircut at the end. We hold separate curves for each and use the one that applies to your puppy.
What actually determines how big your puppy gets
Genetics, and it is not close
Body size in dogs is oligogenic — it runs on a handful of large-effect genes rather than thousands of tiny ones. Six loci alone explain about 64% of the size variation across breeds under 41 kg, and one particular IGF1 variant is present in essentially every small breed and nearly absent from the giants. This is unusual in biology, and it is precisely why "how big were the parents" is such a good question and why breed is such a strong predictor.
If you have the parents' weights, you have better information than any early weigh-in can give you. For a mixed breed with unknown parents, an average of the two if you know them, or a DNA test, will beat this tool.
Neuter timing — and the thing everyone gets backwards
This one is worth slowing down for, because the internet has it inverted. Neutering before the growth plates close makes a dog taller. The classic study — 32 dogs, gonadectomy at 7 weeks or 7 months against intact controls — found the growth rate was unaffected, but the growth period ran longer, producing greater final bone length. Height, not weight.
The effect on adult weight is real at population scale but smaller than the difference between individual dogs. The team behind the growth curves looked at exactly this across their 33,000 dogs and concluded, in their own words, that "separate curves for neutered dogs were not needed." So we do not apply a neuter adjustment to the weight estimate. The effect is smaller than our error bars, and adding a knob for it would be theatre.
You will also see the Golden Retriever and Labrador neuter studies cited in this context. Those are about joint disorders and cancers — real, important, worth discussing with your vet, and not evidence about how big your dog gets. Different question.
Food, and the trap it sets for big puppies
You cannot make a dog genetically bigger by feeding more. You can make it grow faster, and in large-breed puppies that is a problem rather than an achievement — accelerated growth is associated with orthopaedic disease. Growth-plate closure comes later in bigger dogs, which is what stretches their timeline out to 18 months and what makes that window worth protecting.

Paw size is folklore. "Look at those feet, he's going to be huge" is the single most repeated claim in this subject and I have said it myself, in an exam room, to be friendly.
There is no study supporting it. I went looking specifically, and I want to be precise here: there is no study refuting it either. The claim is unsupported, not disproven. But the reasoning does not survive contact with breed variation — how big a puppy's paws look relative to its body is mostly a breed trait, not a growth signal. Collies have petite feet for their size. Bulldogs have enormous ones and stay low to the ground. So paw size confounds "how much growing is left" with "which breed is this," which are exactly the two things a predictor has to keep apart. Use the parents' weights and the curve.
How accurate is this, honestly
Two healthy puppies of the same breed, same sex, same age can legitimately differ in weight by a factor of 1.4 to 2.4 — and both are normal. That spread is biology, not measurement error, and no calculator can remove it. It is widest in small dogs and at young ages.
What we can tell you is how much healthy puppies drift. Across the published data, about 42% of healthy dogs cross more than one centile line during growth, but fewer than 5% cross more than two. Read that both ways, because it cuts both ways: a puppy's track is stable enough that curve-based prediction works at all, and unstable enough that one weight is a weak anchor.
Which leads to the most useful thing on this page, and it is free. Weigh your puppy three times, about two weeks apart, after 12 weeks. That is WALTHAM's own guidance for trusting a growth track, and it is something no one-shot calculator on the internet — including this one, on a single visit — can do for you. Three points beat one. Adult dog mode: the dog weight calculator and dog size calculator in one
Flip the tool to adult mode and it works as a dog weight calculator instead: give it a grown dog's weight and it returns the size class, the typical breeds in it, and the daily calories for a neutered adult at that weight. Useful for a rescue of unknown history, or for sanity-checking whether the "medium" on the bag means your dog.
That second mode is also why there's no separate dog size calculator page on this site, and the reason is worth a sentence. I checked what Google actually returns for "puppy weight calculator", "dog size calculator" and "puppy growth calculator" — the same ten pages, in a slightly different order, all three times. They are one question wearing three hats. Splitting them across three thin pages is how most sites in this niche end up with three mediocre pages instead of one good one. So they all live here.
A size class is a starting point, not a diet. What actually settles whether your dog is the right weight is body condition — ribs, waist, tuck — assessed by hand, and that is a conversation with your vet rather than an arithmetic problem.

How big will my puppy get?
The honest answer is a range. Weigh your puppy, note their age in weeks, and pick their expected adult size class — the calculator at the top of this page plots them on a real growth curve and returns a range with the spread shown. As a rule of thumb from the underlying data: a large-breed puppy is about 29% of its adult weight at 12 weeks, 55% at 20 weeks, and 71% at six months. So a large-breed puppy weighing 22 lb at 14 weeks is heading for roughly 62 lb, give or take 10%. The single best predictor is not any formula though — it is the parents' weights, because dog size runs on a small number of large-effect genes.
Can you tell how big a puppy will get from its paws?
No. There is no published study supporting paw size as a predictor of adult size — and to be fair, none refuting it either. The claim is unsupported rather than disproven. But the reasoning fails on inspection: how big a puppy's paws look relative to its body is mostly a breed trait, not a growth signal. When do puppies stop growing?
It depends enormously on size, and the spread is bigger than most people expect. On the published growth curves, toy and small breeds are essentially finished by about 12 months. Medium breeds finish around 14 months. Large breeds reach roughly 97% of adult weight by 12 months but keep filling out to about 15 months. Giant breeds are still growing at 18 months. Note that the AKC gives shorter timelines — it says small breeds finish at 6 to 8 months — which conflicts with the curve data showing toy dogs still at 83% around seven months. We show both figures rather than averaging them.
What size will my puppy be if it is a mixed breed?
Less precisely, and the tool will tell you so. For a mixed breed the useful input is the parents' weights, if anyone knows them — an average of the two is a reasonable starting estimate. Failing that, a DNA test gives you a breed mix you can size-class from. If you have neither, pick the size class you expect and treat the result as a wide bracket. A doodle or a designer cross can legitimately land anywhere across a 20-plus-pound span depending on which parent it takes after, which is why we mark those breeds as variable rather than pretending to a number.
How accurate is this puppy weight calculator?
About as accurate as the biology allows, which is less than most calculators imply. Two healthy puppies of the same breed, sex and age can differ in weight by a factor of 1.4 to 2.4 and both be normal. Our ranges are drawn from the published centile spread: roughly plus or minus 10% for large breeds and plus or minus 22% for toys. About 42% of healthy puppies drift by more than one centile line as they grow, so a single weigh-in is a weak anchor — three weigh-ins two weeks apart is genuinely better. For giant breeds we are honest that no published growth standard exists at all.
How does the breed data feed the estimate?
It sets the size class, which selects the growth curve — that is all, and that is enough. We hold 151 breeds transcribed from the AKC's own breed pages, mapped onto growth categories derived from how dogs actually grow rather than from round numbers. If you know your puppy's breed, choosing it saves you a guess. If you don't, choose the adult size you expect. One caveat worth knowing: a breed standard is a show ideal, not a measurement of real pet dogs, so actual dogs spread wider than the standard suggests.
